License RenewalIt is the responsibility of individual nurses to ensure their license is current. Licenses
expire annually on March 31st. Applications for renewal must be received by March 15th. Failure to meet the
March 15th deadline will result in a $50 late fee. In addition to the late fee, the registrar cannot guarantee applications will be by processed by the March 31st expiration.
Individuals practicing after March 31st without a current license will automatically receive a $500 fine for a first time offence. The maximum fine is $2,000. A minimum of 6 weeks prior to the renewal deadline of March 15th, applications for license renewal will be mailed to LPNs holding a license for the current year. To maintain licensure, LPNs must:
- Complete the renewal application
- Advise the Board of any criminal offences of which the applicant has been convicted
- Report practice hours for the previous 12 months (not including holidays, vacation, or sick leave)
- Report continuing education
A person who fails to renew a license on or before the expiry date, or to make a special arrangement for extension or deferred renewal that is satisfactory to the Board, ceases to be registered.
New GraduatesTo be eligible for initial registration, applicants must provide:
- Evidence of completion of an approved practical nursing program, specifically an offical transcript of marks;
- Results from the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam (CPNRE). Applicants must pass the CPNRE prior to initial registration;
In addition to the above requirements, practical nurses seeking licensure in Prince Edward Island must provide:
- Government issued identification - drivers license
- Birth Certificate and / or marriage certificate
- A recent criminal record check (within the previous 3 months)

Canadian ApplicantsPrince Edward Island welcomes applicants from other Canadian jurisdictions. To begin the application process, please contact us and request a Canadian Applicant Registration form and make arrangements to pay Canadian Application Verification Fee of $150.
To meet the requirements for licensure in Prince Edward Island, you must meet the following criteria:
- Graduated from an approved Canadian practical nursing program, or equivalent
- Passed the Canadian Practical Nursing Registration Exam, or equivalent
- Practiced 1,000 LPN hours in the previous 5 years, unless graduated within the previous five years or 500 practice hours within the previous two years
- Must be eligible for licensure in the most recent province/territory of practice
- Must provide employment reference from most recent employer
In addition to the above requirements, practical nurses seeking licensure in Prince Edward Island must provide:
- Government issued identification – drivers license
- Birth Certificate and / or marriage certificate
- A recent criminal record check (within the previous 3 months)
All applicants must complete the Canadian Applicant Registration Form and pay the associated fee prior to verification of qualifications.
