P.E.I helps out with vaccine for Mexico 2010/01/18
A large shipment of H1N1 vaccine from Canada’s stockpile heading to Mexico will include 24,000 doses from Prince Edward Island’s portion, says the Island’s chief health officer.
Dr. Heather Morrison says the Island portion is not being taken from the stockpile currently in the province, which is in excess of 10,000 doses.
“So we have plenty available for people that want to be vaccinated,’’ said Morrison.
Canada, which has a large surplus of H1N1 vaccine on its hands, announced Wednesday it will lend some to Mexico.

Number of regulated nurses working in Canada up by 8% between 2004 and 2008 2008/12/18
The number of regulated nurses employed in nursing in Canada grew by 8.3% between 2004 and 2008, reaching 341,431. This represents a growth of nearly 2% every year since 2004, according to a new report released today by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). Over the past five years, the registered nurse (RN) and the licensed practical nurse (LPN) workforces grew at rates exceeding that of the Canadian population, while the registered psychiatric nurse (RPN) workforce kept pace with population growth in the Western provinces (the only provinces where RPNs are regulated).

Holland College will offer Introduction to Pharmacology course for Licensed Practical Nurses in September.
This 60 hour course focuses on basic pharmacological principles, as well as major classifications of drugs, their uses, actions, adverse reactions, special considerations and relevant assessment activities.

Patrice Drake assumed the role of Nursing Policy Analyst with the PEI Department of Health in May 2007. The Nursing Policy Analyst provides advice and assistance to the Health System regarding the planning and policy direction for the delivery of nursing services in all sectors of the PEI Health System. The primary foci of this position include: nursing administration, clinical practice, education, research and human resource planning.
