Practical Nurse Programs
Holland College offers the only PN Program in PEI.The College accepts a limited number of students each September.
Entrance Requirements:
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- Minimum 70 % academic grade 12 English
- Minimum 70% academic grade 11 or 12 Biology
- Minimum 65% academic grade 11 Math
- Police Records Check
- Two applicant reference forms from employers
- Resume
- Attendance at an PN information session.

Returning to Practice
Graduates from an approved program for practical nursing, having successfully passed the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam and qualified for licensing as determined by the PEI Licensed Practicing Nursing Board may apply for the re‐entry program.
The
Nova Scotia Community College Re‐Entry to Practice course has been approved by the PEILPNRB.
Holland College does not offer a re‐entry program.
The course has been designed for completion within an eleven month time frame. Content is presented using distance delivery, on‐site labs and clinical experience. There are three clinical preceptor ships, which must be completed in this course.
Following the program introduction, learners review the Canadian Health care delivery system along with their roles and responsibilities in relation to this system.
The course provides for a basic review in anatomy and physiology, nutrition, growth and development and the social sciences, Alternations in health care are considered in terms of self‐care deficits and include clients in long‐term, acute care and community settings. The concepts relating to community nursing are introduced and then incorporated throughout the course. A module on professional practice includes ethics, values, legal aspects, leadership, scope of practice and the profession.
Content is then expanded in subsequent modules and focuses on:
- Infection control/safety incorporating a microbiology review
- Mobility and immobility
- Gerontology
- Loss, death and grieving
- Communication
- Substance /people abuse
- Physical assessment of the health body
