Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) have been part of the Prince Edward Island (PEI) healthcare system for more than 60 years. Initially, LPNs were called Licensed Nursing Assistants (LNA). In 2002, the name changed to Licensed Practical Nurse to reflect comprehensive changes to practical nursing education. These changes have contributed to new and unique opportunities for the 680 LPNs practicing in Prince Edward Island.
Today’s Licensed Practical Nurse
LPNs and RNs are the two categories of nursing professionals involved in the assessment, planning and evaluation of nursing care. Through their initial education, LPNs develop the knowledge, skill, judgment and ability to contribute to all phases of the continuum of care from prevention to acute treatment and palliative care.
Like our RN counterparts, LPN practice is regulated under a provincial act. The PEI LPN Act and regulations direct the scope, standards and a code of ethics for the profession.
